Marion Isobel Cratchley (née Lyons), March 5, 1920 - March 10, 2014

Marion passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years in Calgary, AB with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, siblings, and many friends.

Marion was born in Westlock, AB to William and Bella Lyons, the fourth of seven children. She graduated from Westlock High School and moved to Edmonton to pursue her nursing career at Royal Alexander Hospital. After graduating with the General Proficiency Award in 1942, Marion nursed for a brief time in rural Alberta before moving to Powell River in 1945.

She nursed at the hospital until becoming the first Industrial Health Nurse at MacMillan Bloedel’s pulp and paper mill.

Marion and her husband started to winter in Palm Springs, CA in the 1960s. Shortly after her arrival in Palm Springs, she was recruited to start her lengthy nursing career at Desert Hospital.

Upon her retirement in 1985, she continued to spend her time between Palm Springs and Powell River. In 2006, she relocated to a seniors’ residence in Calgary to be closer to her family for support.

Marion had a large extended family and many friends who she kept in contact with until her passing. She will be missed, but has left us with many memories.

As per Marion’s wishes, her family will celebrate her life privately at a later date. Please forward condolences through Holloway Funeral Homes. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Marion Cratchley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 Bannister Road, SE Calgary, AB, telephone 1.800.661.1599.

Frederick J. Doupe, June 18, 1929 - February 14, 2014

Fred passed away peacefully at Comox Valley Senior’s Village after living with dementia and emphysema for many years. Left to mourn his passing are Betty, his loving wife of 61 years, their son Robin (Fei

Fei) Doupe, their daughter Terri (Grant) Jones, grandchildren Michelle and Tanner Jones, Erin and Nicole Doupe, his surviving sister, Margaret Smith and many nieces and nephews.

Fred started teaching at the age of 17 in Grand Forks and spent the remainder of his career in Powell River. He was principal on Texada Island and at Cranberry, Wildwood and Brooks schools and was well respected by his students, their parents and his co-workers. His enthusiasm for the task at hand made him a joy to be around.

He was retired for 30 years and enjoyed boating and RVing to Southern California with Betty. He continued to share his love of math with several generations of Powell Riverites through tutoring and spent

many hours growing vegetables on his lot-sized garden. Fred was known for his love of life, his positive attitude, his garden and his passion for teaching. He will be sorely missed.

At Fred’s request, there will be no service.

A favorite charity of Fred’s was Doctors Without Borders.
