Lucille Helena Smyth
After a long and interesting life, Lucille passed away on March 18, 2011. Lucille was predeceased by her husband Bevys, brother Frank (Roberta), and son Frank (Editha) and is survived by her daughters Laraine (Dale), Lynn (Sonny), special son Jim, and daughter-in-law Editha. She also leaves behind grandchildren Curt, Leanne, Deneen, Ross, Edith and Bevys and great-grandchildren Kate, Isabella and Allysa, along with nieces Jill, Gloria-Jean and Lori.
Our very special thanks to Dr. Toole, a warm and outstanding physician who took such good care of Mom over the years.
Lucille was born in Lahore, India in 1915. She lived and travelled throughout India as a child and had many adventures along with her parents. She loved the outdoors, diving and the animals that became part of her life. Later she travelled all over the world, and had fond memories of the time she spent in England. Mom first met Dad when they both attended Vincent Hill School in Mussoorie, a hill station in the foothills of the Himalayas. Later she went to university in the USA, worked in Los Angeles for a time, and then missing India she returned there, marrying Dad in 1940 in Calcutta. In 1949, they emigrated to Canada, finally settling in Powell River a few years later.
Mom loved to write and paint, enjoyed following politics and loved nature and gardens. Most of all she loved her family. She was a wonderful mother and wonderfully unconventional. That unconventionality was our saving grace as her children. She believed life was to be lived on one's own terms and not according to the expectations of others.
Mom and Dad were foster parents to son Jim for 40 years. In many ways, that is Mom's true legacy. Those who know Jim will understand the many challenges he overcame with the unrelenting love, support and perseverance of our parents through Jim's endless hospital stays, visits to specialists, and years and years of physiotherapy. Many wonderful people deserve thanks here as well. Lucille also taught Jim to read when the education system said it was not possible. Later she would win a national literacy award for doing so. Jim would go on to use the computer, play the guitar and the piano. (And much better than the rest of her children!)
Through that compassionate unconventionality, Mom taught us as her children, what was really important in life. She would always tell us, as she tucked us into bed each night, that she loved us up to the skies, up to the stars, and back down again.
Mom, we will miss you and...We will always love you "up to the skies, up to the stars, and back down again."

Muriel was a member of the Powell River Hospital Auxiliary for many years working at the Economy Shop. She leaves behind to grieve daughters Lorna (Bill), Dawn (Ed), Terrie (Brian), daughter-in-law Vi and niece Charlotte (Tom).
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank Evergreen Extended Care, home care support, Powell River General Hospital, lab staff and her angel Pat, to Dr. Dougan and Dr. Burns.
George Brackmann, February 13, 1934 - March 14, 2011
George died suddenly at his home on Duff Island where he lived in his own unique way for nearly 40 years. Even though he died peacefully where he would have wanted to, his sister, extended family and friends weren’t quite ready for him to leave. Thank you George for your wisdom and influence over the years.
George has left the island.
