Donna J. Campbell, June 6, 1946 - May 2, 2013

We regret to announce the passing of Donna Jean Campbell after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. Donna was born in Vancouver and grew up in Powell River where she attended Max Cameron Secondary School and made a number of friends for life. She returned to Vancouver to attend the University of British Columbia, graduating with a bachelor of arts, diploma in special education and master of education degrees.

She was predeceased by her parents Donald and Jean Campbell and is survived by brothers Chuck (Diane), Kenneth (Barbara) and John (Ofelia), as well as nephews Paul (Meaghan), Philip (Crystal), Robert (Darlene), Michael (Lindsey) and niece Ashley. She is also survived by grand nephews Alex and Riley, grand niece Samantha and life-long friend Jacque (Pierre) Scholtz.

After graduating with her bachelor of arts, Donna worked for the recreation department in Powell River for several years before returning to UBC to study special education. Donna’s impact on the young people she taught in her 30 years teaching in special education at Betty Huff Elementary School in Surrey cannot be overstated. The time in her classes made a genuine and continuing difference to the lives of her students.

Upon retiring from teaching six years ago, she was able to devote more time to crafts, particularly weaving, spinning, dyeing and felting, where she produced wonderful, very high quality work and made many friends. She was able to combine her two passions by holding weekly, after-school weaving classes for almost two decades at Betty Huff. She will be greatly missed by her many friends in the teaching and weaving communities and by the children in her weaving classes, as evidenced by the many touching cards and letters she received in the last few weeks.

Donna’s care and daily attention to her mother, particularly during Jean’s last two years, made a lasting impression on all of those who were aware of it. She was caretaker and best friend to her mother until she passed away in 2010.

Donna’s family would like to extend particular thanks to Jacque, Pierre, Barbara, Marika, the Palliative Care staff of Fraser Health and the staff of Nurse Next Door for their contribution to making Donna’s last weeks as comfortable as possible.

She has left us far too early and will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Donna’s life will be held on Saturday, May 25 at the New Westminster Evangelical Free Church (7895 Canada Way at 10th Avenue, Burnaby) from 2:30 pm.

No flowers by request. Please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the children’s charity of your choice.
