Edson L. Zwicker, June 7, 1930 - May 18, 2011

Edson L. Zwicker, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 80, on May 18, 2011, in Powell River, British Columbia, from the complications of old age. Edson was born June 7, 1930, in Middlewood, Nova Scotia, living most of his childhood and young adult life in Hebb’s Cross, Nova Scotia. In 1963, he moved his family to Whittier, California, where he became a successful business owner and real estate investor. He retired to Powell River in 1985, bought a boat, and fished almost everyday for the next five years. Slowed down by a stroke in 1990, he amazed his doctors by relearning how to do almost everything. He especially enjoyed visiting his family, walking his dog and watching the Blue Jays’ games.

Edson Zwicker is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Alice (Hartling) Zwicker; his three children, Peggy, married to Larry Ochoa; David Zwicker, married to Geri Filet; and Pam, married to Steve Wilhelm. His grandchildren include Matthew (April) Ochoa, Benjamin (Tricia) Ochoa, Anna (Stephen) Kia, David (Becky) Zwicker Jr., Joshua Zwicker, Tim (Elizabeth) Zwicker, Sarah (Emmanuel) Salinas, Jeni (Brett) Wilhelm, Julie (Daniel) Wilhelm, and Brenda (Ryan) Paterson. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Aubree and Christian Ochoa; Eric and Ethan Zwicker, whose sister Briana, is with the Lord; Shoshana Zwicker; Connor Kia; and Rebeca Salinas. They will all miss his sense of humour and generous nature.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 27 at 4 pm at the Faith Lutheran Church, 4811 Ontario Ave., in Powell River. A light dinner in the fellowship hall to follow.

Viola (Martinelli) Kerton, 1919 - 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet mother, Viola Kerton on May 16, 2011. Mom was born in Cumberland BC on September 5, 1919. She has gone to be with her husband of nearly 69 years, Gordon. She was a wonderful mother to her six children, Fran (Don) Hart, Judy Pederson, Fred, Pat (Sam) Salomi, Terry (Sandra), and Penny (Dan) Peters, and a loving grandmother to her many grand and great-grandchildren.

Mom overcame many obstacles in her lifetime, but always maintained her sense of humour and dignity. She made many dear friends over the years, both on Vancouver Island and in Powell River, and cherished them all. Some of her fondest memories were of years living in Rock Bay and her summers at the cabin on Powell Lake with family and friends. In their later years, Mom and Dad got the travelling bug and ventured to faraway lands such as Russia and China. Mom loved puttering in her garden, and, of course, the teapot was always on and the cards shuffled, ready for a game at any time. “Vi’s Casino” was always open.

A heart-felt thank you to all her “girls” at the Olive Devaud Sunshine Unit for the wonderful love and care given to Mom. She loved you all, and it meant so much to us. There will be no service by request.

“Shoot the Sherbert to Me, Herbert!”

We love you Mom - Kiss Dad for us!
