Kathleen (Kay) Gwendoline Bennett, November 3, 1918 - May 9, 2014
Kay passed away peacefully at Olive Devaud Residence with her family by her side. Other family members were able to be with her via cell phone and Skype. She was much loved.
Kay was born in Pakan, Alberta. She spent three years (1938 to 1941) working in Aklavik, NWT. While working in the North, she met John Shannon. In 1942 they married in Edmonton, Alberta and had eight children Ken Shannon (Powell River), Pat Wray (Hay River, NWT), Rob Shannon (Calgary), Sylvia Berg (Creston), Joe Shannon (White Rock), Bill Shannon (Coquitlam), Allan Shannon (Cranbrook) and Karen Shannon (Cranbrook). Kay is also missed by her daughters-in-law and all of her extended family. Kay has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren all over Western Canada and Hawaii. She loved to read, paint, garden, play the organ and lawn bowl.
John Shannon passed away in 1984 in Powell River. After some time, Kay met and married Charlie Bennett of Powell River. They were together two years before Charlie passed on. In later years, Kay embraced her Métis heritage. Both of her parents were Métis. Her children and grandchildren proudly embrace their Métis background. Kay was an elder of the Powell River Métis Society.
Mass to celebrate Kay’s passing will be held at Assumption Church on Saturday, May 17 at 1 pm with a reception and burial to follow.
