Gordon “Peter” Griffiths, May 7, 1927 - October 24, 2013

Peter died in Qualicum Beach, at age 86. He was born in Cardiff, Wales and immigrated to Ocean Falls, BC, with his parents Harry and Dorothy (Wood) Griffiths in 1929 where he spent his school years. Peter married his beloved Lois Killin in July 1947 and graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1949 as a mechanical engineer. He and Lois were happily married for almost 30 years. Sadly, Lois predeceased Peter in 1977.

After several years, Peter met (Bobby) Jean Bemister and they were married in 1981. They had many wonderful years together, travelling and caring for their well-loved pussy cats, but she also predeceased Peter in 2005.

Peter was a respected papermaker working first in Ocean Falls for Crown Zellerbach, then in Port Alberni for MacMillan Bloedel before retiring in Powell River from Weyerhauser in 1991. As a professional, Peter was honourable, clear thinking and dedicated. When he retired, it was said that “Peter has led by example and with exemplary work ethics—he will be remembered as a legend and a larger-than-life figure in papermaking.” After his retirement he became a papermaking consultant. This gave him the opportunity to travel to many interesting parts of the world, ranging from Tasmania to China.

As a person, Peter was a gentle man. He was dignified, thoughtful, curious and funny. His special sense of humour was with him until the end. As a father, Peter was wonderful—strong, sensitive, fair and always kind.

Peter is survived by his daughter Nora (Doug) DeVito of Qualicum Beach, his sons Robert of Dallas, Texas, and Kelly (Valerie) of Powell River, stepdaughters Caroline (Geoff) Bedford of Sechelt and Barbara (Bryan) Dyer of Maple Ridge and his sister Colleen (Peter) Pelletier of Qualicum Bay. He is also survived by his grandchildren Deena Carl, Jon DeVito, Samantha, Sydney, Sarah and Savanah Griffiths and Jennifer Drygalski, as well as six great-grandchildren. His brother John Michael predeceased him in Ocean Falls in 1933.

Family was very important to Peter as were the many friends he remained in touch with through letters and phone calls. In 2008 Peter made a return trip to Wales with his daughter for a reunion with his Uncle Ted, whom he hadn’t seen in 70 years. They enjoyed the warm hospitality of many cousins he was meeting for the first time. This trip meant a lot to him.

Special thanks to Dr. Pieter Rossouw. The family would like to express their gratitude to all the staff at Qualicum Manor for the loving and compassionate care they showed dad during his stay there.

No service by request. For those wishing to honour his memory, donations made in Peter’s name to the BC SPCA would be appreciated.

Friends and family are also encouraged to post memories and thoughts for Peter on his Memorial Guestbook.

John Byron Campbell, February 5, 1965 - October 25, 2013

John passed away suddenly at the age of 48 in Kamloops, BC. He was born in Winnipeg, MB and spent his early years in Brandon. Shortly after high school, he joined the army and spent time in Edmonton, AB and Victoria, BC. John eventually settled in Port Hardy and took employment at the Port Alice pulp and paper mill.

Within a few years John decided it was time for a change and began his career with The Overwaitea Food Group. John worked for Overwaitea for more than 25 years, most recently as an assistant manager. It was during these years he enjoyed boating, fishing, astronomy, cribbage and poker, but he will most certainly be remembered for his generosity, his unforgettable laugh, his zest for life and especially for his passion for the game of golf.

John is survived by his 18-year-old loving daughter Alyssa who meant the world to him. He will be missed by all the staff at the local Save-On-Foods store as well as all the people John touched along the way.

A celebration of life will be held at 4:30 pm Saturday, November 9 at Myrtle Point Golf Club. In lieu of flowers a trust account has been set up for Alyssa Campbell at the Powell River branch of CIBC.

The wind is swirling, the course is pristine, we will always feel your presence on number 13.
