Valma Violet Irene Woodman, 1924 - 2013

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Violet on October 31. She was born on February 17, 1924 in Webster’s Corners, BC to parents who had moved to Canada from Finland.

Violet was very proud of her Finnish heritage and spoke Finnish at home with her sister Edna and brother Ted. Violet became a teacher and moved from New Westminster to a little place called Needles in the Interior where she met and married Raymond, her loving husband for 65 years.

They moved to Burnaby in 1952 and lived there until 1964 when they moved the whole family to Powell River. Violet left teaching to be a full-time homemaker when her first daughter was born. She loved cooking, baking and gardening and instilled the love of those things in all her daughters. Violet loved nothing more than to celebrate any and every occasion and it always had to involve food, desserts, card games and lots of family and friends.

Violet was predeceased by her loving husband Raymond in 2011 and her beloved sister Edna in 2007. She is survived by her four loving daughters Laura (John) Cartlidge, Deborah (Ken) Jenkins, Katherine Anderson and Theo (Jim) Ferreira, eight beloved grandchildren Tracy (Mike), Spencer (Gina), Cameron (Lauren), Curtis (Emma), Michael, Matthew, Tyne (Spencer) and Wesley and great-grandson Alexander. She also leaves many cousins, nephews, nieces, family friend Tom Pierce and special friend Betty Rae.

Her love of gardening never ended as she even gardened this summer in her wheelchair at Olive Devaud Residence wearing her gardening hat and carrying her own tools in a special bag. We are sure there will soon be more beautiful roses in heaven.

A special thanks to Dr. Andreae, Dr. Du Toit and Lola who were always there for Mom. We thank Mom’s wonderful second family at Olive Devaud who took such good care of her—we won’t forget your kindness.

A celebration of life will be held at noon on Sunday, November 17 at Cranberry Seniors’ Centre, 6792 Cranberry Street.

Mom you are already so missed—I don’t know who we will phone for recipe and garden advice…

Valerie Joy Warris, née Swanson, October 6, 1932 – November 1, 2013

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mom, Valerie, surrounded by loved ones.

She was predeceased by her husband Ken, parents Elmer Swanson and Aline (Elaine) Johnston, brothers Vernon and Sonny and sister-in-law Shirley. Val is survived by her loving children Ken (Sue), Elaine (Lance), Albert (Arlene), Vanessa (Norm) and Stuart (Tracy), adoring grandchildren Lara, Scott, Miranda, Kelsey, Chelsea, Courtney, Jackson, Shelby, Riley, Kaysha, Teal and Zachary, great-grandchildren Korben, Hailey, Abigail and Mikenna, brothers Gerald, Len (Gail), Olie (Oleta) and Dwight, sister-in-law Berlene and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. She is also survived by her loving companion Bryan Stevens, whom she met at 76 years old and fell in love with.

Mom enjoyed a 23-year career with Safeway and after being diagnosed with liver disease and given only five years to live, she took early retirement in 1990. We were blessed to have her with us for many “bonus” years. Mom enjoyed playing bingo, her trips to the casino and always looked forward to mushroom season, but her family was her world.

Val and family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Toole, Dr. Hoffert, Dr. Meyer and all the staff and volunteers at Powell River General Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, Val would have loved and appreciated donations to Powell River General Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. There will be a celebration of Val’s life at 11 am on Saturday, November 9 at the French Club on Manson Avenue.
