Powell River will undergo a transformation in the next two weeks as musicians from around the world flock to our community for two significant training opportunities.

The first International Harp Academy of the Pacific started last Sunday, June 16. It has attracted musicians from as far away as South America as students and professionals gather together for two weeks of intensive masterclasses and personal growth. Organized by acclaimed harpist Rita Costanzi and hosted by Powell River Academy of Music, the harp academy includes a number of informal outreach concerts for seniors and a performance at Diana Wood’s garden on Westview Avenue as part of the Powell River Spring Garden Tour this Sunday, as well as opening and closing gala concerts.

When the academy announced last fall that it was suspending the 2013 season of SOAP (Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific), a group of Powell River residents and music lovers couldn’t let the program disappear. They quickly organized and established the Pacific Regional International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA), which kicks off its first season this week. Young musicians, along with their trumpets, horns, trombones, tubas, violins, cellos, violas, basses, flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, harps and drums have already arrived in the community for the two-week event. They come to study music under renowned teachers and musicians and learn what it’s like to be a member of a symphony orchestra.

PRISMA offers a number of concerts throughout the next two weeks, as well as special events for residents and visitors to enjoy. Additionally, audiences have an opportunity to observe masterclasses and watch instructors transfer their skills and knowledge to young professionals.

During the next two weeks, the community will be transformed by an infusion of energy and talent as participants settle in to hone their skills and learn from each other and some of the best teachers in their fields. The depth of talent combined with a high level of professionalism produce performances that excel in thrilling and moving those people lucky enough to be in attendance.

Neither the harp academy nor PRISMA would be possible without the hundreds of Powell River residents who volunteer to make them happen. Combined with the talent and vision of the organizers, volunteers and widespread business and community support have created events that make our community a cultural hub. The organizers deserve our gratitude and appreciation for once again creating these transformational celebrations and contributing on so many levels to the rich fabric of our lives.
