Editorial: Cultural tapestry

For the fourth year in a row, local residents will celebrate Powell River’s diversity this weekend.

The celebration of cultural diversity is taking place at Powell River Recreation Centre on Saturday, November 22, and gives residents a chance to learn more about all of Powell River’s various cultures, cuisine and languages. At least 24 cultures will be represented along with seven food vendors offering opportunities for a taste of something different. That’s in addition to a wide range of singing and dancing performances which also highlight how diverse this community is.

It has long been known that fear is erased and acceptance increased when an effort is made to learn about different cultures. That’s why world travel is often such a life-changing event.

Trying different kinds of food and learning a few words of a foreign language is an excellent step to making Powell River a more welcoming community for newcomers and it can be a lot of fun.
