Editorial: Cultural value

While the last note has been played, the memory of this year’s Symphony Orchestra of the Pacific (SOAP) will linger for months.

While the last note has been played, the memory of this year’s Symphony Orchestra of the Pacific (SOAP) will linger for months.

The eighth season of this spectacular cultural event brought close to 70 students and 20 guest artists from around the world to Powell River. During their two-week stay, they performed a wide variety of classical works for appreciative audiences.

The participants have worked for thousands of hours to master their instruments. They performed masterpieces of the great composers, including one of the most beautiful concertos ever written, Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor. For those who attended the first symphony performance, it was hard to believe these musicians had only played together for the previous five days.

SOAP transforms Powell River, adding cultural layers to our community that expand our horizons and broaden our knowledge.

Congratulations to all the many organizers, volunteers and visionaries who make SOAP happen year after year, benefiting the entire community in so many ways.
