Editorial: Giving and sharing

Perhaps this year, in addition to spreading cheer and good will, give those around you peace of mind through considerate actions

Giving and sharing season is in full effect.

With only one week of shopping left until Christmas, panic is starting to set in for some qathet region residents who celebrate the holiday. Frantically searching for final gifts in order to cross names off lists can produce stress in a number of ways, including financial.

But giving should bring about good feelings, not stressful ones.

This week’s Peak might come in handy for those last-minute shoppers. Advertisements throughout the issue highlight businesses where that perfect present for someone on their list could be waiting for pick up, as well as organizations and governments promoting other ways to spoil loved ones, such as personal experiences or by sharing skills.

For those of you reading this online, you'll have to pick up a copy in one of several stores around town, or at the Peak office on Marine Avenue. It'll be worth the trip.

Wherever shopping takes residents over the next seven days, staying safe is the number-one priority, more so than anything related to the holiday season, as COVID-19 is ever-present and top of mind.

On Wednesday, December 15, BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) announced that nine COVID-19 cases were reported in the Powell River local health area from December 5 to 11. Six cases were reported in the area from November 28 to December 4. That followed four consecutive weeks from the end of October up to November 27 where only one case was reported.

Keep that in mind while supporting local businesses and checking off that list. Wash your hands, wear a mask and keep social distancing in mind while out and about.

Christmas is synonymous with giving. Perhaps this year, in addition to spreading cheer and good will, give those around you peace of mind through considerate actions. Putting their health and safety above all else just might be the best gift of all.

Do whatever you can to make sure everyone in the community has a happy holiday.
