Powell River Regional District directors have made a good choice in deciding to develop access to the waterfront in implementing the parks and greenspace plan. The concept is to create pedestrian trails, along with signage, to allow access to the ocean and lakes.

During comprehensive consultation, the public indicated access to the waterfront was an important goal of the parks and greenspace plan. One way to develop waterfront access is to partner with the ministry of transportation to secure road end rights-of-way. Some road ends are inaccessible due to the type of land or surrounding land use. However, there are a range of locations that can provide excellent opportunities in areas which might otherwise have limited waterfront access.

Regional district directors have indicated they are willing to allocate some money in the 2011 budget for the parks and greenspace plan. That decision sends a positive signal that elected officials have heard the public and that they intend to act on the plan’s recommendations.
