During the next two and a half weeks, Powell River will vibrate with music and creativity as musicians from around the globe make their way here to participate in two high calibre events.
First up is SOAP, Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific. Young musicians, along with their trumpets, horns, trombones, tubas, violins, cellos, violas, basses, flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, harps and drums have already arrived in the community for the two-week event. They come to study music under renowned teachers and musicians and learn what it’s like to be a member of a symphony orchestra.
The community is transformed by an infusion of energy and talent as participants settle in to hone their skills and learn from each other and some of the best teachers in their fields. The depth of talent combined with a high level of professionalism produce performances that excel in thrilling and moving those people lucky enough to be in attendance.
Overlapping with SOAP, a Powell River miracle unfolds, as International Choral Kathaumixw begins on Tuesday, July 3. Hap Parker Arena at Powell River Recreation Complex becomes the stage as choirs from around the world make their entrance and the first bars of the gala opening concert ring out.
In the following five days, the community will hum as the global gathering of choirs and conductors celebrate the best in choral music. Residents and visitors will be treated to a vast array of international concerts, choral and vocal solo competitions, common song singing, conductor round tables, concert tours, social events, workshops and seminars.
More than 20 years ago, festival organizers chose the Tla’amin (Sliammon) First Nation name Kathaumixw, which means “a gathering together of different people.” The event is known not only for the high quality of its music, but also because of the philosophy that defines it. The festival brings together musicians and music lovers to celebrate music and its ability to bring peace to the world.
Neither SOAP nor Kathaumixw would be possible without the hundreds of Powell River residents who volunteer to make them happen. Combined with the talent and vision of the organizers, under the umbrella of Powell River Academy of Music, volunteers and widespread business and community support have created events that make our community a cultural hub. The organizers and volunteers of world-renowned SOAP and Kathaumixw deserve our gratitude and appreciation for once again creating these transformational events and contributing on so many levels to the fabric of our lives.
