Editorial: Seniors' care

Vancouver Coastal Health and Powell River Regional Hospital District announced a particularly important agreement early this week, the replacement of Olive Devaud Residence.

The announcement ensures the construction of a new complex care facility that this community so desperately needs. As people live longer, as Powell River’s population ages, requirements for health care increase and more people inevitably require a greater level of care. Olive Devaud was never designed to house patients who need a high level of care. Both patients and staff have sustained injuries because of design deficiencies.

The agreement came as a result of many people working toward it and because community representatives never let the issue drop. They are all to be congratulated for their dedication and persistence in pursing this much-needed facility for the community.
