Stepping up
It may not be the official beginning of the year, but for many Powell River non-profit organizations and clubs September is the return to routine. And it’s a time for building and welcoming new people. Many community clubs and non-profit organizations are looking currently for help. Why not consider donating some time?
Powell River has a long history of volunteering and that has helped foster and develop this community’s strength and vibrancy. Since 2005, Volunteer Powell River has been helping connect non-profits with people who have time to donate in that community building project. Over its decade in operation, the community volunteer organization has connected over 600 people with positions such as organizing events, fostering animals and helping out with office support. And that success is something that not only needs to continue, but also be increased.
Volunteer-ing is a great way to get involved in the life of the community, learn new skills, share passions and meet new friends.
For newcomers to Powell River, volunteering can be a vital in helping them make their new home feel more comfortable.
For young people, it can provide important learning opportunities and chances to discover hidden talents and new potential. It’s also a great way to gain experience and try out different career paths without having to invest a lot of time and money into education. This is valuable for those seeking new employment as well.
Also, volunteers can help save lives. Powell River Search and Rescue, auxiliary fire and police brigades, and emergency social services all rely on the goodwill of the community to help.
For those who are near retirement or who have retired, donating time can help maintain connections, bring interesting new experiences that may be outside a person’s career area and provide the opportunity to share passions and skills.
This fall, please consider registering with Volunteer Powell River and help further the culture of community volunteering by pitching in a few hours a week, Powell River becomes a healthier place when its people take care of each other.
