Summer fun
Summer arrived in BC on the long Canada Day weekend, with high temperatures that shattered records all over the province. The hot weather arrived just as the community celebrated Canada’s birthday at a number of events.
This coming weekend, summer fun continues with the Texada Island Sandcastle Weekend. With luck, sunny skies will continue to provide the backdrop to a weekend of fun and games on the island. A parade, new activities for children, a slow pitch tournament, food and art vendors, bed races, lip syncing, a laser light show and moon bag lanterns, along with the construction of artistic wonders made of sand all happen during the two-day event, which does have something for people of all ages to enjoy.
Texada continues to hold the spotlight with the Texada Fly-In and AeroSpace Camp in July. The annual event attracts hundreds of pilots and aviation buffs from all around the province who come to enjoy live entertainment, view different aircraft and enter contests.
This year’s Powell River Sea Fair marks 50 years, a momentous milestone. The much-anticipated event at the end of July combines a parade, fire works, amusements, crowds, entertainment, fabulous food, and a host of other ingredients that all add up to great fun and community pride.
In August, the annual Blackberry Festival takes over the community’s attention. Luscious, juicy blackberries in all their many transformations take centre stage during festivities, culminating in the Blackberry Street Party. Hundreds of people crowd Marine Avenue from Alberni to Duncan streets, lighting up the town in a mass of energy. Side shows, treats galore, meeting and greeting friends and neighbours are all part of the fun on this night.
Wrapping up the summer is the Sunshine Music Festival on Labour Day weekend. Crowds gather underneath the tent at Palm Beach to be entertained by a varied and stimulating lineup of musicians. Adding to the festivities are the many booths supplying tasty treats, arts and crafts.
This year’s festivals offer a variety of events and entertainments, an opportunity to socialize, meet new people and become reacquainted with old friends and a venue to display some of the fun and thrills our community has to offer. These celebrations could not happen without the countless hours of volunteer effort that go into making each of them a success. As well as organizing all the myriad details, the volunteers allow us to celebrate the best in Powell River and showcase our community.
As we celebrate and have fun, we should remember the people who make it all possible. They deserve our gratitude and appreciation for a job well done.
