Editorial: Weekend warriors

Well here it is, the biggest camping weekend of the year. Time to get out the tents, mosquito repellent and the hot dog skewers. And yes, for many of us, this weekend may also involve one or two adult sodas, or wobbly pops, if you will.

Well here it is, the biggest camping weekend of the year. Time to get out the tents, mosquito repellent and the hot dog skewers. And yes, for many of us, this weekend may also involve one or two adult sodas, or wobbly pops, if you will. Or maybe a few more than one or two.

The long weekend is about having fun and enjoying the summer. It’s about swimming, camping, times with friends and, sure, partying. No one thinks it’s not going to happen, nor should they. Party on.

But with the recent vandalism at Dinner Rock campground and memories of the disgusting mess left on Savary Island after last year’s BC Day long weekend perhaps a reminder is needed to play nice. Disrespecting and nearly destroying the little slice of paradise that you have taken the time to come visit over the weekend is not an essential part of having fun. It’s immature, illegal and entirely unnecessary.

There will be increased police presence and monitoring on Savary Island this weekend, but there shouldn’t have to be. We should all have the common sense and respect to clean up after ourselves, take back everything we have brought and leave our natural areas as we found them. Because somebody has to and to think that it should be anybody but you is ridiculous.

So go out there, enjoy the hot summer nights out in the woods or on the beach, but please: show a little class.
