Letter: A name change is more than a name change

"It is time to draw the curtain on the inherent racism embedded in a colonial view that remains fundamentally unexamined and, until recently, unchallenged."

The name change [for Powell River] is symbolic and will acknowledge a cultural shift to a more indigenous ideology [“Process for possible renaming of

City of Powell River proceeding,” October 20].

In the end, the process should bring greater clarity and understanding of the need for a transition in how we work, live, educate and play.

It is time to draw the curtain on the inherent racism embedded in a colonial view that remains fundamentally unexamined and, until recently, unchallenged.

A name change is the visual representation of this evolution.
