Letter: Affordable housing difficult in City of Powell River

I see that there is a need for affordable housing in City of Powell River [“Apartment bylaw passes via close vote from Powell River Council,” February 3]. This will be difficult to achieve in this town.

As with the increasing taxes on residential homes, there is also increase in taxes on corporate ownership. Any developer who is willing to put up their money and time to build new housing requires a certain investment payback or it’s really not worth it.

This means only a very small percent of new builds (apartments or other) will be designated as low income, so we really won’t achieve the goals set out by the city.

Ever wonder why a lot of businesses can’t make it in this town. High rents.

We are on a treadmill that we can’t get off. The community has to realize that we can’t afford all these social “nice to have” programs that cost money. There has to be hard decisions made by our city to make our town more affordable.

I challenge all our councillors to look at every program and whether the payback is really justified. It’s just common sense.
