City of Powell River Council is considering a bylaw regarding north harbour moorage rates ["Proposed moorage rates reviewed by City of Powell River finance committee," June 27 ] that would institute a massive increase.
If passed and given final reading, it would result in ending a seniors discount (11 per cent), adding 15 per cent each year for the next three years, adding an additional 10 per cent for qathet residents, and a 15 per cent increase for north harbor boaters living outside our area.
If you are a senior living in the qathet region, this will result in an increase of over 100 per cent by 2025.
The moorage that north harbour boaters presently pay covers the full cost of payment of principal and interest on the construction loan for the existing harbour, all maintenance costs and a contribution toward the rebuilding of the north harbour in 2041.
Members of an ad hoc committee that deals with issues relating to the harbours will be speaking in opposition to Draft North Harbour Rates and Regulations Bylaw 2702, 2022 at the July 5 Committee of the Whole meeting (3:30 pm at council chambers, accessed through the back of municipal hall). We will be asking council to amend the bylaw to reduce the proposed increase for 2023 and also to form an advisory committee that will negotiate fair increases for future years.
If you are concerned about this increase and wish to show support for those opposing the bylaw, please attend.
