In the Peak article [“City of Powell River Council discussion focuses on possible name change correspondence,” February 3], I was surprised to read in a quote from city councillor George Doubt: “...if people send a piece of correspondence they want on the agenda of city council, they need to send it to the city.”
How many people know this? I also have never been sent confirmation that my correspondence has been seen at the council table.
Of course Powell River residents feel the “possible” name change is a “done deal.” Just how long does it take to “[quote from councillor Cindy Elliott]...make comprehensive information available for people to digest through our community engagement”? Months, so far, it seems.
In the meantime, how much are we paying the consultants who have been hired to work on the engagement, and who are they?
After “extensive public engagement” the perfect time to enlist everyone’s opinion would be the upcoming November 2022 municipal election. The ballot question being: Are you in favour of changing the name of Powell River? Plain and simple.
