Letter: Government is not just about what it costs

Initiatives are an everyday task, part of putting tax dollars to work

Government is not just about what it costs but what it does with our dollars, every day of every week.

Yet here we have the acclaimed premier [David Eby] acting as though its daily tasks are something new, or to be looked at anew, extolling the idea of initiatives led by him, his ministers, deputy ministers and senior managers, to make things work better [“Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA hopes to serve in Eby's cabinet,” October 26].

Surely, however, it is the ongoing, everyday responsibility of all civil servants, and especially the senior ones, to ensure procedures are looked at and changes are made to make government and government services work most efficiently, not just go to work and deal with matters by rote. In addition, does he not have IT and operational divisions that are looking at these things every day, too?

Government is not new. Its trouble is, in my opinion, that it rests on its laurels, gets complacent about its role of making every tax dollar work, does not bother to ensure it has enough and qualified resources, and that it has no excesses.

Initiatives are an everyday task, part of putting tax dollars to work.
