Letter: I will always call Powell River my home

We have a constitutional right to our democratic society to be able to vote and call for a referendum, and have a voice and say in something that will affect our whole city in the future... ~ Brian and Cori Dingell

We need to think of all the people of Powell River who live here and have called it home forever [“Process for possible renaming of City of Powell River proceeding,” October 20]. Many different cultures reside here now.

Does Powell River have no jurisdiction of its community?

Powell River is the name of our city, established in 1912, but now we are being referred to more and more as qathet Regional District (qRD). What happened?

It seems like the regional district is now in charge of Powell River. How is it that outside the municipality has swooped in and taken over everything to do with Powell River? Who is behind all this?

Going about changing/proposing the name of everything associated with Powell River, trying to erase our city, and now the hospital, is an injustice to Powell River as a whole. I will always call Powell River my home.

How is a name change going to erase or change anything? History cannot be undone. It still happened.

This needs to be well thought out for the community (everyone). Don’t take that away from the many thousands of residents who were born and raised here and have called this home, now and forever.

Why are City of Powell River councillors and the mayor, who we voted for to protect our interests, allowing this to happen and not standing up for our residents, who call Powell River home?

We were blindsided by the fact of this possible decision-making by a group wanting to change the whole dynamics of our city. This could turn our city upside down and divide us. Changing will be very costly, further complicating things.

The people and the city are not to blame, so why are we being blamed for something we had no part of and nothing to do with? Leave us out of this conflict, which could be detrimental and split our city. We have a constitutional right to our democratic society to be able to vote and call for a referendum, and have a voice and say in something that will affect our whole city in the future, as this will be a life-changing, costly and legal decision.

I hope this will be resolved and we keep our name. Hopefully our voices and opinions matter. Let’s not lose our connection to our home. We all live here.

Brian and Cori Dingell,
Powell River
