Letter: Local group works on water rights issue

"...province’s efforts to protect access to water and to ensure adequate supply through licensing have not been that successful."

I agree with last week’s writer that governments need to prioritize ensuring growers have access to water, not bottled water companies [Viewpoint: BC is mismanaging our water, December 20].

In the qathet region, citizens who care about water rights may want to join the local Council of Canadians group, which works on this issue.

And yes, the province’s efforts to protect access to water and to ensure adequate supply through licensing have not been that successful. But those efforts do not explain why people on the lower Sunshine Coast faced severe water restrictions last summer.

Indeed, the town of Gibsons has been widely recognized for its efforts to protect nature and the water it needs by managing natural assets carefully and including them in infrastructure considerations.
