Letter: Natural gas is not carbon free

Rather than face the hard task of significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions, our governments have hidden behind half-truths and weak legislation, while investing in fossil fuels. ~ Cecil Michaels

The greatest insult to natural gas users may not be the carbon tax [“Viewpoint: Levies an insult to natural gas users,” January 12].

The public has been fed propaganda by governments and industry that natural gas is green energy, or at least less harmful than oil and coal. However, natural gas (methane) is not carbon free at all, and as in all combustion processes, produces nitrous oxide, another greenhouse gas.

The debate over carbon taxes and carbon credits goes on. Neither really lowers CO2 production, but shifts the blame between homeowners, commuters and industries.

Natural gas and its exploration, development and marketing are heavy in CO2 production and this has been overlooked by consumers, industry and governments invested in fossil fuels. Trying to convince governments to strive away from fossil fuels is like convincing bankers to lend interest-free loans, or putting the fox in charge of the chicken coop.

Rather than face the hard task of significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions, our governments have hidden behind half-truths and weak legislation, while investing in fossil fuels. This is not leadership.
