Letter: Opposed to name change

"Replacing the city name is an expensive and useless way to try to fix the crimes of the past..." ~ Doug Clark

I would like to add my name to those opposing a name change to the City of Powell River [“Chief administration officer outlines procedure for renaming Powell River,” July 17]. This would create division in our community rather than community from our division.

Replacing the city name is an expensive and useless way to try to fix the crimes of the past; we have trouble enough trying to fix the crimes of the present.

A name change would only create difficulties for people, forcing the renaming of most businesses in town, requiring the alteration of all maps and directions, imposing an address change on all city residents and confusing all tourists who may be visiting or revisiting our city.

I just don’t see how this in any way makes the horrors of residential schools disappear. Nor does it improve the lives or memories of present day Indigenous peoples.
