Letters: Misleading information; Kudos to loggers

Misleading information

I read that we have a new pool lift [“Complex adds lift,” July 6] to assist handicapped people and I want to thank the city for its efforts.

I would like to clarify, however, this is not a lift for wheelchair people who cannot stand. This is a device for lowering people who can walk, but cannot walk up and down stairs.

This is not a lift as would be needed for people who need to be lifted out of their wheelchairs. There are no lifts of this type at the hospital pool or at the recreation complex.

The nearest lift in the true sense can be found at Comox Valley Aquatic Centre. It is misleading to call what we have a “lift.” A person can go online and see several of these lifts in use in most cities in BC.

I believe it is time we get a lift that all handicapped people can use with the help of an attendant. And, yes, it would also be great if we had ramp access to our pools.

Also, it would be wonderful if we had a pool for the elderly where the water is warmer, as older people like more heat; we all get old.

We have an increasingly aging population. Let us try to keep our elderly, attract our retiring public and make our city attractive to those people.

Kudos to loggers

Can we all agree on just how incredible the Powell River Logger Sports event [Section B, July 13] was this past weekend?

It seemed like an impossible task. Organizers wanted to revive an old event that was likely romanticized in its absence, to effectively fill a hole in the Powell River tourism calendar.

Organizers, volunteers, competitors and crowds made this weekend at Willingdon Beach an unforgettable experience. The newly named Loggers Memorial Bowl is a magnificent addition to the Powell River waterfront, the competitors were amazing and the atmosphere from end to end of the Willingdon area was electric.

Thank you to everyone associated with this event. You’ve done Powell River proud by bringing logger sports back to town and have once again shown how this community punches well above its weight in the quantity and quality of events, and tourism options offered for residents and visitors.
