Cigarette ash could spell disaster

As usual, the Blackberry Festival was an event not to be missed. Public toilets, too--well done.

I am proud to be one of the six people who initiated and organized the first Street Party, which was on Joyce Avenue. Also, the cake run out of a small office in Powell River Town Centre Mall, for which I baked cake all night at home. Now we have the awesome Festival of Lights firework display, provided by Quality Foods, which makes a great event even greater.

But, as I was anticipating with excitement this year’s display, I watched in horror and disgust a woman flicking her lit cigarette over the bank at the old arena site. A very short time later she pointed out smoke rising from the bank [“Fire ban covers all of coast,” August 1]. I approached her and pointed out that it was her carelessness that was the cause, to which she replied “I guess so.”

My gratitude goes to those who acted quickly with water bottles, soft drinks, et cetera. The fire department was alerted and responded as quickly as possible, considering the crowd.

What could have been a disaster was prevented, but the threat, however, is still with us. So smokers, please accept responsibility for your habit, don’t smoke in a crowded situation especially when the fire hazard is so high and  please use a personal ashtray. They are available. Look what we have to lose. Is your cigarette worth that? I am a former smoker.

My appreciation goes to all those who work so hard to bring this event to us every year. Let’s keep it going safely.

Pride has place

Kudos to the young people of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community who organized Powell River’s first gay pride event on Saturday, August 25, at Willingdon Beach [“Community shows pride in diversity,” August 22]. The music was great, the food was great and the company was great.

The courage and high spirits of these young people was inspiring. Well done. I hope there is an even better turnout to support you next year.
