Environment key in election

With an election soon approaching I find it astounding how little mention there is of the ever more perilous effects of climate change and acidifying oceans. Politicians seem to be riveted on the economy and jobs. Though I agree they are important we seem to be missing the fact that, with global warming left unchecked, our economy will be devastated by the cost of trying to repair the resulting catastrophic effects.

Over the last decade the Canadian government has been one of the least environmentally-active to the point that Canada has been labelled a "dinosaur." So, I am left wondering which politicians will open their eyes and present us with a viable environmental plan [“Environment underpins policy,” March 4].

I remember being shocked and dismayed once when a politician I respected made the blatant statement, "I'll listen to the people who will get me votes". But, when I think about it, that statement is true and powerful.

I am therefore writing to the political parties to let them know that I care about their environmental plans and that the party which can implement the best plan for our planet will get my vote. Each of us has this power and together we can make a change.

Winning team

Congratulations to Cam Miller and his senior girls’ soccer team who claimed the prestigious AA High School Soccer Championship this past weekend [Thunderbirds win provincials,” June 3]. Such an achievement is not only a great reflection of the coaching abilities of Miller but also represents the soccer community of both Brooks Secondary School and the wider community of Powell River.

It has been my pleasure, over the past 25 years, to both coach and play against many soccer teams from Powell River from community youth and school to men's and masters’. I have nothing but great memories from these occasions.

I understand the semifinals was a thrilling shootout victory. No doubt our dear and recently departed friend Toni Marciniak was shouting from "Heaven above!".

From all of us at Carihi Secondary and Campbell River a heartful congrats to all involved in the mighty win.
