Protection instinct

This is my very first letter to a newspaper, so please bear with me.

I am a 61-year-old British Columbian grandmother who is very protective of her cubs.

Proponents of filthy coal have been lulled into a false sense of security because for the past 20 years they have witnessed steelmaking coal trickle onto Texada Island [“Council majority calls for coal impact assessments,” October 9]. They think that it is more of the same. Well, it is definitely more, and then some. However, it is anything but the same.

Lafarge Canada Inc. says its employees and the community are very dear to it. I’m not so sure about that. I’m betting there will be zero direct jobs created by this unhealthy scheme. There will, however, be the creation of indirect jobs in the health care sector to look after those of us who will develop breathing difficulties. Children are particularly vulnerable as they are still in the developmental stage of life.

But, we won’t talk about that because it makes the shareholders feel a bit uncomfortable. I wonder if they are protective of their cubs?
