Festival seeks help
Another Sunshine Music Festival has come and gone and those in attendance know that it was a very successful one [“Musician travels across world,” August 14].
The music, food and weather were fantastic and the booths offered a plethora of eye-catching items.
Over the past 32 years the music festival has become an integral part of the summer for many families in our area and to finish the summer off without a music festival would seem somehow wrong. Unfortunately the possibility of that happening does exist, as the people who are working behind the scenes each year have been doing it for a long time and are getting tired.
The music festival is in a financially sound position right now due to well-attended events and responsible management, but it is short on volunteers.
The festival committee is putting out a call for anyone who would like to be involved to please email [email protected]. We’re looking for responsible people with all sorts of talents, so there’s a place for everyone. It’s a great way to become a part of an important event in the community and have fun while doing it.
We look forward to hearing from you.

BMX track great idea
BMX bikes are indeed the fashion today. I have a nephew and one son who enjoy the BMX life. Powell River has never had a BMX track or park of its own so now it is nice to see that City of Powell River council is planning something for the town [“Advocates lobby for bike park,” September 11]. The best thing to do for BMX is have a nice track in the centre of town, all lit up and fenced in.
There is a track here in Squamish that has a big rally this month. The track is used by the BMX club on a regular bases and is always busy. I can see Powell River doing just as well with this sport.
It is very exciting to watch people of all ages, from four to 50 or older, riding the track.
Powell River riders need a good track for tricks and a good track to do their stuff. They need support from everyone to make this a go. There are plenty of riders in river city who would love a park or track so they can enjoy BMX life, the sport and compete against others from around BC or across the country.
Yes, I can see this project take off in the right direction and move forward. Good luck to the BMXers. Two thumbs up.

Orca fleet
Maybe this Marine Avenue parking problem is a perfect opportunity to put into practice our stated ambition to find green solutions in Powell River [“Study recommends parking improvements,” September 11].
Why not utilize, and expand if possible, parking lots off Marine, charge for parking, then have one or two small jitney buses that run up and down the street, stopping several times on each block. Ridership would be free so people could hop on and off the bus at will. Pay parking would probably cover the cost of the jitneys.
If we had the small buses professionally painted like orcas, it would be a signature Powell River look and encourage tourists to enjoy shopping on Marine. Eventually we could run other free orca buses from various points around town: from the harbour up to the mall, from the centre of town to the Townsite, et cetera.
Perhaps we could even sell the enormous and under-utilized city buses we now have as public transportation and put the money into the orca program instead.
