Viewpoint: Canada is a peace-keeping nation

It seems very typical of the right-wing governments these days to create more and more ways to keep us frightened of everything so we do not pay attention to the atrocities they perpetrate behind the scenes. Stephen Harper’s government has been by far the worst for this activity that Canada has ever had to suffer through.

I wonder whether Weston can answer how many Canadians have been killed by these “hordes” of radicals he claims are out for our blood? I submit there have been more of us killed by moose than have been killed by terrorists. I grant you, that may change as the current federal government has taken it into its head to march lockstep with the most imperialist nation on earth, the United States. Why, exactly, has the Conservative government decided Canada needs to go to the Middle East to support Dick Cheney et al in making more billions in profit at the expense of innocents? When did the federal Conservatives decide that Canada needs to be a warlike country instead of a beacon for helping others? Is this so Canada can have a few corporations make huge profits in this country as well as the US? Is the government hoping those ill-gotten profits will find their way into Tory coffers?

I am deeply saddened by this direction Weston and his party is taking this country in. At one time we were a peace-keeping nation, there to mediate disputes as best we could, and try to reconcile warring sides. Now it seems we are there to participate in conflict, rather than trying to end it. What a terrible thing it is to be ashamed of my government.

I call upon the federal Conservatives to get back to what this country should be, a nation of proud and free people, free to speak their minds, and advise the government on where we wish to go, rather than this dictatorial rubbish foisted upon us, muzzling all opposition and “siccing” the Canada Revenue Agency on any organization which dares question the government.

If political activity should draw an audit, I ask the federal government to please look at the Fraser Institute, one of the most politically-active “charities” there is, but then I guess, this charity supports the Conservative party line so is therefore bulletproof. Better yet, I call on Canadians to throw the Conservative party out of office before we become as universally hated as the US, and for the same reasons.
