Viewpoint: What is BC doing to protect old growth?

Should nothing change, irreversible damage may occur to our ecosystems. ~ Zayda Neeme

I am writing today as a citizen of British Columbia, concerning the old-growth logging rates in our province.

In recent years, logging old growth has become increasingly popular due to its economic value; this is potentially harmful to the ecosystem and countless endangered species.

These ancient, biodiverse forests are of the largest natural carbon sinks in the world and are extremely productive. So, what is our provincial government doing to protect this valuable land that contributes to keeping our ecosystems healthy? Our provincial government is logging the forests.

Our province has roughly 13.7 million hectares of old growth – 10 are protected. While this is progress, 3.7 million hectares of old growth are left unprotected.

Annually, an average of 200,000 hectares of forest lands are logged, with old growth accounting for 27 per cent of this.

Environmental organizations such as the Ancient Forest Alliance have been shocked by these numbers and have expressed concern for our environment. Should nothing change, irreversible damage may occur to our ecosystems.

Consider supporting organizations that advocate for the protection of our forests, such as the Ancient Forest Alliance. By drawing attention to this subject, it will no longer be dismissible.

Remain informed on what is happening in our province.
