A Taste of Art returns

Rotary Club of Powell River present annual fundraising event

Artist Ed Oldfield, pictured here with Rotary Club of Powell River member Jill Eghoetz, is providing two art pieces for the second annual A Taste of Art on May 7, including this one with Chinook salmon and herring on driftwood from Savary Island.

Art and wine lovers will be bringing out their finest apparel when A Taste of Art returns on Saturday, May 7.

Numerous Powell River artists are contributing two original pieces for the fundraiser event presented by the Rotary Club of Powell River to benefit worthy local projects.

Former art teacher Ed Oldfield provided items for the event last year and is again this year.

Since his retirement two years ago, Oldfield has been concentrating on creating large and small raku pieces that are sold in nearly a dozen galleries in BC and Alberta. In the early months of the year, his kiln is fired up almost daily to produce approximately 1,000 pieces annually.

“This is my year for colour,” says Oldfield. “Since January, I have done eight different colours and they have all looked great.”

One of the pieces he is providing to A Taste of Art was still warm when Rotary member Jill Eghoetz and one of the event organizers picked it out. The vase has small starfish and a string of barnacles that Oldfield created.

A second, larger piece has raku fish mounted on driftwood from Savary Island. Savary is a favourite destination for Olfield to accumulate a background for fish, which are predominant in his art.

Eghoetz says attendees of last year’s inaugural event can expect the same formal affair with some new twists this year.

“We have made a few changes,” she says, “including asking artists for two originals each.”

Eghoetz expects that after the successful first event, even more art and wine lovers will bring out their tuxedoes and evening gowns this year.

“For more than 60 years, our Rotary club has been contributing to the community,” says Eghoetz. “It’s fundraisers like this that allow us to continue to do that.”

Tickets for A Taste of Art are $35 and include five wine tastings, canapés and live music. Additional tastings can be purchased. Tickets are available at Pebble Beach Design Studio, Crazy Quilt Cottage, from any Rotarian or at atasteofart.ca.
