In the seven and a half years since Keith Allen purchased Great Canadian Carpet Cleaners, the business has expanded its offerings to serve even more of its client's cleaning needs.

Allen sold his building maintenance business in the Lower Mainland and moved to Powell River to enjoy the many outdoor recreational activities available, and a more relaxed lifestyle with family.

As his local business has grown, he has introduced a number of new services. As the name states, the company provides carpet cleaning, which is one of the foundations of good indoor air quality, according to Allen.

“It’s been proven through studies that carpets act as a filter,” he says. “If they’re not getting cleaned properly then it builds up. It’s like having a dirty filter in your furnace.”

Proper cleaning and maintenance can also affect the longevity of carpets, he adds.

“If you get your carpets cleaned on a regular basis they can last longer,” says Allen.

Air ducts also have a major effect on indoor air quality. As the weather becomes warmer, dust and pollen may become an issue in homes and offices.

“Every surface you have gets dusty, that includes the air ducts, especially during this time of year,” says Allen. “Dirt and dust will settle in there and then you turn on your furnace and blast it all over the place. It’s important to have that cleaned.”

The company also provides hard surface cleaning of floors, tiles, grout and gutters, as well as concrete driveways and sidewalks.

Great Canadian Carpet Cleaning has new pressure washing equipment for all types of hard surface jobs. Allen recommends dealing with experienced professionals who can determine what type of equipment is best for each surface. Pressure washing, he says, is one service where it is important to ensure the equipment is being used by an experienced professional, as it is not always the right tool for the job and can damage some surfaces when not used correctly.

“We had a lady call us after having her house pressure washed,” says Allen. “It was vinyl siding and the pressure washing embedded the dirt into the vinyl.”

Concrete is another surface that needs to be cleaned with care as it can be easily damaged if washed at too high of a pressure.

“These are things you need to watch for and make sure the people you have doing these jobs know what they’re doing,” he adds.

Allen says he is happy to provide free estimates and advice to clients. Customers who have more than one job to be done can bundle the services to access discounts, he adds.

“If you book a combination of things, like carpet cleaning and duct cleaning, we work deals on pricing,” he says.

Roof cleaning is another necessary aspect of home maintenance. Moss removal is not only for aesthetics, it is required by some insurance companies, says Allen.

“Some insurance companies are demanding the roof be free of moss or you may not have a warranty on your roof coverage.”

Great Canadian also offers janitorial services to local businesses and medical facilities, residential house cleaning and cleans upholstery and carpets of boat interiors.
