Double Dutch Fusion

Art show and book launch teams up Dutch duo
Arnold Nouwens and Kaimana Wolff
Artist Arnold Nouwens and author Kaimana Wolff are ready for their combined art show and poetry reading with an opening reception on Thursday, June 2.

Fusion, an upcoming art show and book launch at Vancouver Island University (VIU), will have an interesting twist: the highlighted artist is featured on the book’s cover.

Artist Arnold Nouwens and author Kaimana Wolff have something in common beyond their dedication to the arts. Both were Dutch immigrant children, became acquainted in Vancouver decades later and moved to Powell River as seniors. The two reconnected three years later at Arts Alive in the Park as common members of Malaspina Arts Society.

Nouwens recently painted the cover art for Cured of Kings, the second collection of poetry by Wolff (better known to locals as Eva van Loon), and the show will feature a variety of his work, along with readings from the new book.

“I love paintings,” says Wolff, “especially as book covers. The minute I saw Arnold’s work, I wanted to live with some of it. The painting of a woman hugging a wolf stands for the whole crazy, failed fairytale so many women can tell, told by 50 years of poems.”

Upon retiring from commercial art, Nouwens began painting full-time. Within a couple of years, he won a number of Award of Excellence recognitions from the Federation of Canadian Artists. Fusion will mark the first time a variety of his abstract works will be on display.

“The more I thought about the idea of us doing this show together, the more I thought it was great,” says Nouwens. “People can expect a variety of styles, not just one, even within my abstract paintings.”

Wolff, also an instructor at VIU and book publisher, says she is looking forward to unveiling her tenth book in the company of Nouwens’ work.

“I’m excited to offer live poetry in the environment of these vigorous paintings,” says Wolff. “Come to hear the poems and view the collection of paintings. Munch on some Dutch goodies and perhaps an idea will arise out of your own experience. Make an art out of life.”

Fusion will remain available for viewing in the VIU foyer throughout the month of June.
