Showing appreciation to their supporters is paramount to volunteers at Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary’s Economy Shop.
Since celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2015, the organization has demonstrated its gratitude by hosting an annual Customer Appreciation Day that offers sales, tasty treats and the opportunity to win a prize to everyone who comes through the door.
“Everything in the store will be half price,” says Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary secretary Lorraine Stokes. “There will also be cake, refreshments and drinks for everyone, and a couple of free draws and prizes in appreciation of our customers.”
This year’s event takes place from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, May 5.
Stokes says the event is a way for the organization to say thank you to regular and occasional customers, and also to Powell River area residents who choose to make donations, which are imperative to the operation of the Economy Shop.
“We would not survive without the donations we receive from this town; it is actually quite amazing how much is given to us,” says Stokes. “We want to make sure we are giving those people appreciation as well, even if they just drop by to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.
Including entertainment for children has always added an enjoyable aspect to Customer Appreciation Day, says Stokes.
“We run the candy-striper programs through Powell River General Hospital for those who want to go into health care later on in their lives and they come in and do things like face painting for the kids,” she adds. “It is just a fun day.”
A team comprised of more than 100 volunteers help run the Economy Shop, covering a variety of departments, including shoes, toys, electrical, Christmas and housewares.
“Last time I counted we had 113 volunteers at the Economy Shop, and I know we have more now,” says Stokes.
Staff members working on Customer Appreciation Day enjoy the event as much as the shoppers and supporters who drop in for a visit, but volunteering time at the shop is rewarding every day, adds Stokes.
“Every day is a fun day,” she says. “We don't have trouble getting volunteers to come in.”
