Golf fundraiser for Grace House

Registration now open for charity tournament at Myrtle Point Golf Club

Powell River and Region Transition House Society is now taking registrants for a charity golf tournament at Myrtle Point Golf Club.

A charity golf tournament planned for September will raise money for Powell River and Region Transition House Society’s Grace House, but what organizers need now are golfers.

Current outreach coordinator Maureen MacLennan is challenging local businesses and organizations to register for 9 Holes for the House, a fun golf event at Myrtle Point Golf Club featuring draw prizes and dinner afterward.

“For those who have supported Grace House in the past, and those who haven’t, come on out and pick up a golf club,” said MacLennan.

The mixed tournament is open to golfers of all skill levels, which is why $2 mulligan cards, which will serve as a second-chance for botched shots with all proceeds going to the transition house, will be important and, for some, necessary.

MacLennan said support from the business community has been exceptional and the tournament will also serve to raise awareness about the transition house society’s important and long-running services for abused women and children.

“A lot of people in Powell River don’t understand how many women we serve,” said MacLennan. “They think this sort of thing doesn’t happen in Powell River, and I’m here to tell you that I can’t remember the last time we didn’t have someone in Grace House.”

MacLennan said funds raised will go toward future programs and needs at the transition house, such as playground equipment and playroom updates.

Draw prizes for golfers include two return tickets to Vancouver donated by Pacific Coastal Airlines. A catered dinner by Myrtle Point’s Orca Bistro will follow the tournament.

With other activities planned throughout the afternoon and evening of Friday, September 16, including complimentary on-course beer tasters from Townsite Brewing, MacLennan hopes to see registration for the golf tournament fill up fast.

“It’s going to be a great day and there will be lots of fun things going on at the different golf holes,” said MacLennan, “and, remember, those $2 mulligans will be very important!”
