While all four members of The Timewalkers are excited to play a concert in Powell River next Friday night, Ron Irving’s level of excitement might just be a tad higher than his bandmates.

Irving, who grew up in Powell River, has been back to play solo a couple of times, as well as for collaborating with longtime friend and local guitar mainstay Ron Campbell, but the upcoming show at Max Cameron Theatre will be his first time here with his band.

“It’s a great looking venue,” says Irving. “It definitely looks a lot better than it did when I went to school at Brooks, and the theatre is really nice, so we’re looking forward to coming up.”

Irving and Campbell got into music together as kids and have since collaborated on songwriting, including the title track for The Timewalkers latest album, Brave New World.

Irving, along with the rest of his band, has decades of experience playing in bands, but in The Timewalkers they have all found the right fit, he says.

“All the guys have a long history of performing and recording, so it’s really a labour of love,” says Irving. “Everybody in the band sings, we all write songs and have been on all kinds of records and in the music business for a lot of years, so it’s really a bunch of fun.”

According to Irving, the upcoming show in Powell River will feature two sets; the first is a traditional concert set and the second will feature a bit more crowd interaction.

“The second set will be more of a dance vibe and we’ll get some people up on that big Max Cameron stage to do some dancing and have a bit more of a party,” he says. “Both sets will have a lot of hits by artists we all love, as well as some of our own songs.”

Something The Timewalkers are not, says Irving, is predictable. With all four members playing guitar and singing, as well as trading off on bass, the band “runs the gamut” of musical styles, he says.

“A lot of the covers we do are ’60s and ’70s hits, but our originals are a bit all over the map,” says Irving. “One thing people really like about our shows are the harmonies, because we all sing. We’re definitely a retro-sounding band, but we do everything from modern sounding country pop to stuff that sounds more like Steely Dan.”
