Parks and recreation holds egg hunt

City invites kids and their families out for annual Easter event

Children 10 and under are invited to participate in an annual Easter egg hunt at Willingdon Beach Saturday morning.

Easter egg hunts are a favourite holiday tradition for many young children, but they often happen in the confines of a family’s backyard.

An annual community event for children 10 and under ups the egg-hunt ante as large groups of children will scramble for chocolate eggs and other treats at Willingdon Beach Saturday morning.

“This event is BYOB; bring your own basket!” jokes community recreation program coordinator Shawna McLeod.

The annual spring holiday event is organized by City of Powell River Parks Recreation and Culture department and is free for young children and their families.

“The event is sponsored by [our department], CUPE Local 798, Save-On-Foods and many fabulous volunteers who give their time to make the event a success,” says McLeod. “It’s a free, fun, family event.”

Once the hunt is over, there are other activities and games to enjoy, thanks to community groups and the sponsors, she says.

“Fun games will be led by the Powell River Girl Guides, who will be also selling their cookies,” said McLeod. “Kiwanis Club of Powell River will also be on site selling hot chocolate and there will be face painting, music and a petting zoo.”

The hunt, which begins promptly at 10:30 am (so arrive early!), will be divided into age groups so smaller children have a fair chance to find chocolate eggs and other treats among their peers.

McLeod says signage will be placed around the beach park clearly stating where children of different ages should hunt. “Look for your child’s age group’s designated egg-hunting area placed around the park.”
