Revitalized dance school

Historic Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy celebrates with year-end recital

Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy has a rich history with more than 25 years teaching Powell River youth different forms of dance.

A longtime student of Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy has spent the past year revitalizing the historic school that has more than 25 years of history in Powell River.

Artistic director Paige Anderson started at the academy when she was three years old and says she was immediately hooked on dance. A year ago, Tamasik asked her to take over the academy as he was ready to retire.

“I wanted to bring the school back to what it once was,” says Anderson. “We have had the most amazing first year since the revitalization and can’t wait to continue the legacy of dance here in Powell River.”

The academy’s annual recital, taking place on Saturday night with the theme: Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night, will feature ballet, tap, contemporary, lyrical, tap and musical theatre from its dancers aged three to 18.

“Many lifetime friendships and memories are made at the academy,” says Anderson.

The academy, which Tamasik took over in 1989, has changed its name a few times over the years, from Powell River School of Dance, to Back Door Studios, back to Powell River School of Dance, to Laszlo Tamasik School of Dance and then finally Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy when Anderson became artistic director last summer.

“Even though the name changed over the years, the purpose of creating something special didn’t,” says Anderson.

Anderson says past academy dancers have been lucky to have trained with experienced dance teachers from all over the world, including ones who had worked with National Ballet School of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and many others.

“Growing up dancing in that era felt magical,” says Anderson, “and that rush is still felt when our dancers step on the Evergreen Theatre stage, taking in the whole sensational experience,”
