GROWING EVENT: Seed choices will be plentiful at this Saturday’s annual Seedy Saturday event at Powell River Recreation Complex.

An annual event celebrating seeds is bigger than ever, thanks to the injection of new energy and the guidance of those who started it more than 10 years ago.

The 11th annual Seedy Saturday, a seed exchange and sale, will feature a number of workshops and activities. The event has seen most of the former committee members who ran the event for the past decade come full circle with seed sales of their own, according to new event co-chair Juhli Jobi.

“Seedy Saturday was formed by a group of farmers really focused on local seed production and educating people and encouraging them to save their own seeds,” says Jobi. “It’s really encouraging that the group that had spent so much time organizing it in the past has come together as a small cooperative and is selling their own seeds this year.”

Featuring workshops on zero-waste gardening, composting, edible plants, saving seeds and more, the daylong event is also a learning tool for those who attend.

“The workshops are to help people understand what to do with the seeds and how to have successful experiences with the seeds they buy,” said Jobi.

The event will include the sweep swap and sale, garden fair, kids corner, raffle, information tables and more. Seedy Saturday is run by Powell River Farmers' Institute.

Jobi says when she heard the event was looking for another organizer, she was quick to step up with co-chair Ellen deCasmaker, who runs Eternal Seed on Zilinsky Road with her husband Gary, and ensure the event would happen again this year.

“It’s such a valuable community event,” says Jobi, who is also market manager at the Powell River Farmers’ Market. “It’s really neat to be a part of the seed stage so early on, because I see all of the great results of the seeds later on at the market.”
