For more than a decade, WorkBC Centre-Powell River has been organizing opportunities for job seekers to engage directly with potential employers from diverse sectors such as health care, social services, retail, trades and hospitality.

This year, the tradition continues as WorkBC hosts its annual job fair, connecting job seekers with employers from across the qathet region on Thursday, May 9. The fair takes place from 2 to 4 pm at the ARC Community Event Centre located at 7055 Alberni Street.

Brodie D’Angio, manager at WorkBC Centre-Powell River, emphasizes the fair's importance in simplifying the job search process.

“We want to create a space where job seekers can meet with local employers,” explains D’Angio. “It’s about making connections and giving job seekers the chance to talk about their skills and talents in a supportive environment. This kind of interaction can significantly accelerate the hiring process.”

Last year's event saw over 135 adult and youth attendees, many of whom secured jobs on the spot. This year, the fair aims to replicate that success, offering not only job openings but also the chance for future employment opportunities.

Job seekers are advised to come prepared to the free event with their resumes and be ready to discuss their qualifications. D’Angio also suggests dressing appropriately for the job role they are interested in.

“Dress for success; if you’re targeting a job at the bank, dress business casual, for construction, wear clothes that you might as if you were on the work site,” says D’Angio. “It’s about showing potential employers you’re ready to step into the role.”

The job fair is not only a chance to find a job but also an opportunity to learn more about different organizations and the roles they offer. WorkBC employment counsellors will be available at the fair to provide interview tips and other job search assistance.

“Bring a resume, target it on the sector you’re interested in, and feel free to stop by 4511 Marine Avenue [WorkBC Centre-Powell River] for support on resume or cover letter writing before the event.”

Employers looking to participate can reserve a table by calling 604.485.7958 or emailing [email protected].

D’Angio encourages employers to be prepared for on-the-spot interviews and to bring along job postings.

The event is fully accessible and provides designated parking. “Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect with employers and network,” adds D’Angio, “and perhaps secure a job at the job fair.”

WorkBC Centre-Powell River is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm every Wednesday, and 8:30 am until 1:30 pm on Thursdays.
