Minor hockey stars shine at awards night

Family and friends of Powell River Minor Hockey Association players streamed into Evergreen Theatre, Powell River Recreation Complex, on Wednesday, April 4 to cheer on their hockey stars.

Warren Behan emceed the annual awards night that honours players, volunteers and families for their dedication to the game.

Big news this year included Midget Reps and Bantam Reps going to provincials. Midgets brought bronze home and Bantam came fourth.

House teams did well in tournaments held in Powell River with Midgets and Pee Wees winning.

The following awards were presented:

Dennis Clancy Memorial Trophy—Spirit of the Game Award: Cam Stevenson. This trophy is donated by the Clancy family in honour of Dennis.

Dustin Clark Memorial Trophy—Junior Coach of the Year: Randy Casparie. This award has been donated by Powell River Regals Hockey Club in memory of Dustin, a five-year-old Novice player who died tragically in 2000. This trophy is awarded to a junior coach who best demonstrates dedication, sportsmanship and leadership qualities.

The following awards were presented to players who best demonstrate sportsmanship, dedication and all around hockey ability and academic achievement:

Rick Hopper Pee Wee House Player of the Year Award: Daniel Schweitzer.

Brandon Kremsater Memorial Plaque—Pee Wee Rep Player of the Year: Bryson Cecconi. This award is donated by the Kremsater family in honour of Brandon.

Brad Bombardir Bantam House Player of the Year Award: Zachary Brach.

Gary Lupul Memorial Plaque—Bantam Rep Player of the Year: Hunter Findlater. This award has been donated by Jeff Sauve in honour of Gary Lupul.

Powell River Kings Midget House Player of the Year Award: Richard Tattersall.

Sokolowski Award—Graduating Midget Award presented by Andy Welsh: Alex Mastrodonato and Eric Scott. This award has been donated by the Powell River RCMP in memory of Constable Doug Sokolowski. This award is given to any Powell River Minor Hockey graduating Midget player who has demonstrated the most sportsmanship, desire for fair play and respect in the minor hockey program.

Harvey Small Award—Senior Coach of the Year: Steve Ashworth. This award is presented to the House League coach who best demonstrates the dedication, sportsmanship and leadership qualities exemplified by Harvey Small.

Official’s awards:

Jack Hildebrand Plaque: Rookie Official of the Year: Jeremy Hopper. This plaque is awarded for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in officiating minor hockey games in Powell River.

Mike Fraser Plaque—Junior Official of the Year: Brady Casparie and Bradley Ford. This award is for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in officiating minor hockey games in Powell River.

Luke Bombardir Plaque—Senior Official of the Year: Dean Piccinin. This award is for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in officiating minor hockey games in Powell River.

Frank Sutton Memorial Award—Volunteer of the Year: Anna Cristante. Donated by the Powell River Regals Hockey club, this award is emblematic of dedicated service to the promotion of minor hockey in Powell River.
