Less than 10 hours after falling 6-3 to Mission in the semi-final of the 2019 BC Hockey Midget Tier 3 Championship in Cranbrook on Wednesday, March 20, Powell River Midget Rep Kings returned to the ice for the bronze-medal game against Squamish at 7 pm.

Squamish defeated Powell River 3-2 in a round-robin game earlier in the tournament and came out on top again to claim third place with a 2-1 win.

“It was a close rematch,” said Powell River assistant coach Scott Mastrodonato. “The kids gave it their all but fell short.”

Squamish scored in each of the first two periods. Powell River answered with 10 minutes remaining in the game to close the gap to one but were unable to find the back of the net again, even with the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker in the last minute.

“We outshot them 35-17 but just couldn’t muster the goals we needed,” said Mastrodonato, adding that the players were “running on fumes” after an exhausting six games in four days.

Terrace beat Mission 4-2 to win gold.
