No, the RCMP is not selling the stolen rock drill beside Highway 101

Intriguing sign attached to abandoned rock drill sparks curiosity

The intriguing sign that has been placed on the stolen, overturned rock drill

While Sunshine Coast residents wait to see just how the stolen, overturned drill on the side of Highway 101 will be removed, some passerbyers may have noticed an intriguing sign attached to the machinery.

Early morning on Jan. 31, a low-bed trailer was stolen from Trout Lake Road and was carrying a rock drill. Security camera footage showed the low-bed trailer passing through downtown Sechelt – without the drill onboard.

The drill fell off the trailer near the 6700 block of West Sechelt on Highway 101 and has remained there for the last month. Since then the rock drill has been nestled on the side of the highway, with many passerbyers wondering about the logistics of removing such a hulking piece of machinery.

In what appears to be a gag, someone has placed a “for sale” sign on the rock drill. (They were perhaps taking a page out of the book of the jokester who placed the for sale sign on the burnt-out van that was a roadside ornament in Elphinstone in March 2023.)

Prospective buyers however, may have been confused if they attempted to reach the seller.

The phone number provided belongs to the RCMP non-emergency line. Coast Reporter reached out to local RCMP to determine whether this was a joke, or if law enforcement was entering the repossession industry.

RCMP media relations officer, Cst. Karen Whitby confirmed that RCMP did not place the sign on the drill, and that they are not selling the drill.

For the time being, the future of the Sunshine Coast Highways newest landmark remains uncertain.
