An ex-Apple engineer in Vancouver created PhotoPin, a free app that can quickly show documents like the BC COVID-19 vaccine pass or driver’s licence.

The days of the awkward vaccine pass and driver’s licence fumble are over thanks to a local app designer.

Michael Levy is a retired Apple engineer living in Vancouver and a few months ago he wrote an app for himself to show his B.C. Vaccine Card and driver's license with a single touch.

When he showed the app to his family they all wanted it too so he made it available to the public.

The app is called PhotoPin and is available for free in the Apple App Store with no ads and no need for a login. Just download the app, add your vaccine passport screenshot and image of your B.C. photo ID, and you are good to go. The app can take up to nine images, however three is the default.

The B.C. Vaccine Card, or "vaccine passport" is required for entry to organized gatherings, events like concerts or Canucks games, and for table service restaurants. Though set to initially expire at the end of January 2022, health officials announced Jan. 25 the B.C. Vaccine Card program would remain in place until June 30.

“I have always loved programming - what was a profession is now, for me, a hobby,” Levy wrote in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. “I am not doing this to make money. But I do get satisfaction knowing that I have contributed something useful during this awful and endless pandemic.”

Fun fact: The app’s landing page on the store features a photo of the app’s designer sitting outside the Cambie street JJ Bean store.
