National vintage car club president visits
Riding down the highway last weekend, Powell Riverites might have thought they were in a time warp. There were 39 visiting vintage cars in town from the Vintage Car Club of Canada, everything from a 1926 Dodge to a 1965 Mustang.
There are 23 chapters in BC, and Powell River’s Vintage Car Club is just one of them. Powell River’s chapter was host for the Vancouver group on Saturday, October 4. Among special guests was Dick Parton, president of the National Vintage Car Club of Canada.
“It’s the Vancouver chapter’s fall tour. Kind of a wind-up for the season,” said Powell River’s vice-president, Ken Ruedig.
The visitors stayed at the Beach Gardens Resort, where they had a special banquet Saturday night. On Sunday, October 5, a cavalcade of cars took a run out to Lund.
Contrary to rumors, the Powell River Vintage Car Club is still alive and well, and open to anyone with a car 25 years or older.
“In fact, you don’t really have to have a car, you just have to have an interest in vintage cars,” said Ruedig.
People join the local club because they have fun learning about cars, and attending special events. An annual May Tour that lasts for three days on Victoria Day weekend is always something members look forward to. The group also travels to a national meet that is held in a different place each year. This event, as well as others, usually includes annual judging events, seminars on restorations, and meeting and socializing with other members of the Vintage Car Club of Canada.
