A recent switch between Community Living Space in Cranberry and Jean Pike Centre on Alberni Street for its adult client services has been a good one for inclusion Powell River, according to Lilla Tipton, executive director of inclusion Powell River.
Named for a founding member of inclusion, Jean Pike Centre had been housing preschool and infant development programs since its establishment in 2007. Home to adult programs since July, the reason behind the switch was a practical one, said Tipton.
“We wanted our adult clients to have easier access to the centre and to the community,” said Tipton. “It’s more in keeping with our goal of connecting our clients with the community they live in.”
The centre located in a former church is already abuzz as clients enjoy group activities like dancing and bingo, or more solitary activities like quilting.
“It’s all about creating a community that is welcoming and accessible for people with developmental disabilities,” said Tipton.
As part of the move to the centre of town, inclusion Powell River hired Chris Weeks as a community connector.
“I am going out there and trying to find new ways to connect this centre with the community,” said Weeks, who has started a Tuesday evening drum circle. “I want everyone in the community to see this place as somewhere they are welcome.”
For client Carol Buchinski, the benefits of the new location are clear. “I can walk here from my house now.”
