Air cadets learn winter survival

Outdoor survival first aid leadership part of program

Seven members of 22 Red Knight Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets participated in an overnight snowshoe exercise to A Branch cabin recently. The cadets had fun experiencing the outdoors while learning valuable lessons about avalanche safety.

Powell River Search and Rescue instructor, Andy Evans, taught the cadets tips on identifying snow conditions and potential risks for avalanches. The cadets were given instruction and time to practice search and rescue techniques with different types of avalanche beacons buried in the snow.

Air Cadets gives local youth the opportunity to develop skills in leadership, citizenship, instructional techniques, first aid, outdoor survival, and opportunities to earn pilot scholarships. Powell River’s squadron parades every Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at Timberlane Barracks. Youth ages 12 to 18 years are encouraged to attend and see what the program has to offer.
